AWS Law Reform and Representation Group

What does the Group do?

The AWS aims to articulate and represent the views of women solicitors, promote women’s interests in the profession and campaign on issues important to women solicitors. We therefore believe it is vital that the AWS has a voice in the consultation process of any new proposed legislation or changes to the profession. The Group responds to consultation papers on behalf of women solicitors not only on issues that affect our members specifically but also on legal matters generally.

A list of our responses is set out below.

If there is a consultation paper which you think that we should be responding to, please let us know at the e-mail address below.

How do I get involved in the Group?

We encourage members to get involved in the Law Reform and Representation Group.

How does the Group work?
We tend to divide up consultation papers into manageable portions for an individual or a couple of members to work on. We discuss the final draft before sending it off to the appropriate organisation/government department.

Do I need to be in London to be in the Group?
No, contact is done partly or wholly by e-mail. We particularly welcome input from those working outside London to ensure that we are representing the views of all our members.

I don’t have the time to be a full-time member of the Group, but there are issues that I feel strongly about in my practice area. What can I do?
Some of the consultation papers to which we are asked to respond are specialised e.g. Legal Aid, family, criminal law, which may primarily interest those practising in those areas. You do not have to sign up to participate in every consultation response. You can join our Panel of Experts who are asked for their views and assistance on specific consultation papers only.
